Ocean Inlet Sunrise

Shot was taken as the sun rose at the Boynton Beach Inlet in Southern Florida. I was surprised at the number of folks out fishing off the piers. After taking some wide-angle shots, I put on my 50mm lens for this shot of the sunrise and its reflection.

Escape at Sunrise

Got up early the last day before the time change to grab a final sunrise. Got to the Boynton Beach Inlet with time to look around for a shot. Settled on the bridge above the inlet and waited for the sun to rise. This was the last boat out before the sun rose.

Arch of Septimius Severus Slaves

In the Roman Forum resides a large triumphal arch called the Arch of Septimius Severus. It detailed the triumphant return of the Romans over another conquered people and here we see some of the slaves they brought back with them.

Duomo Stained Glass Window

The Duomo in Florence is one of the main attractions in that city, with good reason. The church is topped by what was the largest dome in the world until the modern age. You take the stairs to the top of the dome as well but you better be in good shape because it is very narrow and quite a climb (463 stairs). It was difficult getting up there but the view was awesome. I believe I took this shot on the way up.

Swamp Sunrise

This shot was taken at a local nature preserve with a mile or so boardwalk old people power walk in the early morning. It is also good for bird photography though at the time I didn't have my 70-300 so I had to be content with wide angle sunrise photos.

Colors of the Bahamas

One of the neat things about the Bahamas is the color of the homes there. Many folks chose to pain their homes in vibrant, bright colors that look so good with the super clear water. This shot was taken zooming along in a boat just off shore.

The Amphitheater at Ostia Antiqua

A short train ride outside of Rome are the ruins of Ostia Antiqua. While not as famous as Pompeii, this ancient city is very well preserved and definitely worth the trip with a knowledgeable guide. This large amphitheater is in the center of the city and would be where plays and concerts would be held. Being here early in the year and in the morning it was fairly empty, which helped set the mood walking around the ruins of this Roman city.

Versailles Trees

This view was found while exploring the park at Versailles. A wide angle lens would've probably worked better to get a sense of the distance and height involved but I wanted to see what the compression of my telephoto lens would do.

Roman Subway

After reading about pickpockets, I was hesitant in taking the subway in Rome but of course it was fine. Looking back, I wish I had taken the subway much sooner as it would have saved years of damage on my feet. I probably walked a quarter of Rome's streets over the course of six days.

The Colosseum

This shot of the Colosseum is from atop the Victor Emmanuel Monument down the road. There was an annual marathon through Rome happening which is why you see the street so busy. Normally it would be full of cars speeding past one of the most famous ancient buildings in the world.

Hampton Court Palace

This is the side view of Hampton Court Palace in England. A thirty minute train ride outside of London can get you here and I recommend doing so. Besides learning the history of the palace and Henry VIII, they have a pretty gardens as well.

Pretty Plumage

A whole group of peacocks wandered around the grounds of Warwick Castle in England. They called to each other and opened up into the impressive display you see here. It was pretty cool to be able to get so close to them.

Colorful Butterfly

Just one of countless butterflies at Butterfly World in South Florida. It was a lot of fun try to photograph these guys fluttering about everywhere. Thankfully, they often stopped to take a drink from a flower so you can get super close to them.

Blue Heron Bokeh

I had gotten up early to catch the sunrise in Sarasota but as usual the sky was full of clouds and I barely saw the sun. I was pretty annoyed at having gotten up so early for nothing when this beautiful big Blue Heron came walking nearby looking for fish in the bay. I spent five minutes or more slowly following him around trying to get some good photos. It was a good reminder that even though you may have a plan to take certain kinds of pictures you need to keep an eye out for other, potentially better, possibilities.

Waiting for Mr. Right Bee

Giant bees were floating from flower to flower and I just imagine this one waiting its turn.

Il Vittoriano Silhouette

At the top of each side of the giant white Victor Emanuel (Il Vittoriano) building in rome are statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas. It was a bit late in the day when I made it to the top so it was the perfect time to capture this silhouette of one of the large statues.

Pisa Rose Garden

Besides the Leaning Tower there isn't much to see or do in Pisa. They do have a museum though with various items including some from the old basilica next to the tower. On the way out of the museum though was this pretty little rose garden.

Ancient Rome Panorama

This panorama was taken on the top of the Il Vittoriano (Victor Emmanuel Monument) in Rome. A pricy ticket to take the glass elevator to the top but quite the view. You can see many of Rome's famous landmarks including the Colosseum, the side of Constantine's Bascilica, the Arc of Titus, part of the Palantine Hill, and some of the Roman Forum.

Morning at the beach

This is part of a public beach in Treasure Cay in the Bahamas. This HDR was taken just after sunrise on my way back from taking my first real sunrise pictures.

Supermoon

With all the fuss over the supermoon, I had to make it over to the beach to get a shot of it. Unfortunately, I wasn't there for it coming up on the horizon but I got there shortly thereafter. This was the best I could do with my 70-300mm lens, which on my D90 comes out to 450mm. To get the best shot you'd need a 600mm lens but those cost as much as a used car so that isn't going to happen.

Hippodrome of Domitian

Located on the Palantine Hill in Rome, Italy this stadium was built by the emperor Domitian. Various athletic games would have been held here. Like all of the ruins in Rome, the scale of the buildings are impressive and it makes you wonder how breathtaking they probably were almost 2000 years ago.

Decay

Driving along the road in the Bahamas I saw this rusted and seemingly abandoned machine. I think it was a cement mixer but it is hard to tell. It seemed like lots of things get left behind or unfinished there for some reason. I ran this photo through Silver Efex Pro's Dark Sepia filter since it seemed appropriate.

Can't go wrong with a simple, clean macro shot of a rose. Don't know what kind of rose this is (seems to be countless kinds) but it doesn't matter. Pretty.

Red Drift Algea

Along with having countless sea shells, Sanibel Island beaches also had some of this colorful seaweed. Apparently, this stuff is bad for fish and was the cause of the fishy smell we encountered (along with the occasional dead fish or crab). Not very pleasant but this bleached section looked kind of pretty so I thought a macro shot could look neat.
